Cousin Bertha's Bohemian Dumplings

Cousin Bertha’s Bohemian Dumplings                          - Bertha Weiner

Sift together:  2 C. flour

                        2 tsp. Baking Powder

                        2 tsp. Salt

Then, add 2 pieces buttered toast – cubed – and mix together

Add 2 eggs that have been beaten in ½ C milk.

Mix.

Let stand 20 minutes (cover bowl with towel).

Divide into 2 dumplings and add to boiling water.  Boil 10 minutes and then turn over and boil 10 minutes more.

Remove from water and place on paper towel to “dry.”

After the dumplings have cooled, cut into slices.

Next day:  fry slices in butter – calories? Yes, but so delicious!

Enjoy!

Cousin Bertha was the only child of Fred and Mary Weiner.  Mary (or Deta Mary as we called her since she only spoke Bohemian – and “Deta” means “Aunt” in Bohemian) was a sister to John Lehecka.  John Lehecka (and Albina Valenta Lehecka) are the parents of Elsie Lehecka Vogel and Thomas Lehecka.  Elsie (and Norbert Vogel) are my parents.

Bertha and Fred and Deta Mary lived in Willow River, MN on the farm.  Bertha was an only child and never married.  After Uncle Fred died, Deta Mary and Bertha would spend the winter with Grandma and Grandpa Lehecka in Forest Lake, MN.

Both Deta Mary and Bertha were terrific cooks and along with Grandma Lehecka, created fabulous meals for all the holidays.  It was tradition that we have Bohemian Dumplings at each of these meals.
