A "Love Letter" from Bert to Elsie

November 15, 1959

Dear “Mom,”

How about that!  Here I am writing my first love letter in about twenty years!  Now – how did I do this; guess I’ve forgotten how.  Oh well, I’ll try anyway.

You sure missed it last night.  We had 171 from Gladstone Baptist – every skate from 6 to 12 was out – 158 rentals.  Ginny and I started the program when we had 84 – and then they started coming.  I thought they would never quit coming.  About half-way through, Kit (Robertson) called and said they were swamped at the bar and could I come up and help out?

About that time, Ginny and I were going to crazy – selling pop with one hand and handing out purses with the other.  Then, run out and blow the whistle and run back!  It was fun though.  We called Doc to come down and help at the end.  He sold pop and candy and handed out purses!  He got quite a kick out of it.

The CafĂ© did fine -- $270 food / $300 liquor.  The best food day we have ever had.

This wasn’t much of a love letter, but I don’t think I have to tell you that I miss you.  The girls are doing fine so far.  Joanne is cooking today (hot rolls with a napkin yet!).  Have fun, Mom – we will be thinking of you.

Love,

The Old Man!
